The pilot of the multi-engine airplane reported that, during the landing flare as the airplane was about to touch down, an elk ran onto the runway and into the landing path of the airplane. The airplane collided with the animal, the left landing gear collapsed, and the left wing impacted the runway surface. Subsequently, the airplane veered left and exited the left side of the runway before it came to rest. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing.
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
