The student pilot reported that, after completing a normal approach, the airplane touched down nose gear first and the airplane bounced. The airplane continued to bounce down the runway and the pilot elected to abort the landing. He applied full engine power and the airplane again became airborne and veered off the left side of the runway. The pilot attempted to maneuver the airplane to the right, however the airplane descended onto the uneven dirt surface on the right side of the runway. The right main landing gear separated from the airplane and the lower fuselage was substantially damaged. The student pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
The pilot reported that he was landing after a local flight. He stated that during the landing flare he “stalled the plane about 10 feet AGL [above ground level].” The airplane sustained substantial damage when the right wing tip contacted the ground. The pilot stated that he did not know that the right brake system had been damaged. The airplane exited the runway and the pilot added power to gain airspeed. The left wing contacted the runway. The pilot requested a go-around. The second attempt to land was uneventful “without further damage to the aircraft.” The air traffic controller requested that the pilot make a 180-degree turn and taxi to the ramp. As the pilot stopped, he realized that he did not have right brakes and reported it to the air traffic controller. The pilot’s accident report listed no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions with the airplane.
